Having lost last season's Primo NBL final by a whisker, the club has been
extremely active on the transfer market, assembling a squad that looks
infinitely stronger than the 2005 model.
In former University of Cincinnati team-mates Kareem Johnson and Field Williams(left),
the 0800 Easy LPG-sponsored team look to have done some great business, while
Brisbane Bullets forward Callum Baines and former Otago Nuggets big man Sam
Walker will add another dimension to the club's inside game.
Throw in the established stars such as Paul Henare, Paora Winitana and Adrian
Majstrovich and it's easy to see why the odd player was guaranteeing an
inaugural championship win after Thursday night's practice at Napier Boys' High
School. But, as the coach said after that news was relayed to him, there will be
no more of that.
``Anyone who's talking about a championship needs to take a step back,'' said
Dennis.
``As soon as you start to focus on the outcome instead of the process, then you
don't get the outcome you desire. I would've thought they should all have learnt
the lesson from last year when we thought we had a great team and then were very
slow out of the blocks.''
Still, even by his exacting standards, Thursday night's full training run was
something to be pretty pleased with. Dennis wanted a stronger presence inside,
which he has in Johnson and Baines, and a reliable outside shooter.
Well, for a guy who'd just flown Houston to Denver, Denver to Los Angeles, Los
Angeles to Auckland and then Auckland to Napier, Williams absolutely shot the
lights out.
A two-year starter during his three years on the roster at Cincinnati, the guard
hasn't played for the last few months since the end of a contract in Germany.
``I can't wait to play. I haven't played competitive basketball since I was over
there,'' the 25-year old Williams said.
After such a circuitous journey to get here, Williams said he was both a bit
jaded and confused.
``It was only a light practice tonight but my legs are tired. I actually thought
New Zealand was in Australia but everybody's told me it's not. When I got here,
I thought it was going to be March 1, but then they said it was March 2, so I
lost a day somewhere.
``I don't really know what's going on.''
Johnson(right) was a bit more prepared, having been a central figure in the Auckland
Stars Waitakere's one-point win over the Hawks in last season's final.
``I definitely wanted to come back to New Zealand,'' the Alabama native said.
``I would've liked to have gone back to Auckland but things didn't work out
there and I jumped at the chance to come and play in Hawke's Bay with a point
guard like Paul Henare.''
Johnson finished a stint with a Finnish club a fortnight ago and said having
Williams here as well would help both of them adjust to the new environment and
playing system. He says it was a basically a coincidence that the pair of them
ended up on the same team but given that they're represented by the same agent,
former Hawks import Rob Wilson, it tends to make more sense...
